There are many who talk about sustainability, and then there are those few that actually live it. Matt and Melissa, the husband/wife team behind What the Soap, LIVE IT - gardening, foraging, fermenting, canning, raising chickens - in order to be as sustainable and as close to nature as possible. Their home and soap workshop (their converted garage) are completely solar powered and their soap packaging is simple and recyclable, eschewing plastic. But how did their story begin? Well, there’s an App for that… a Sustainability App. Matt and Melissa met online in 2014 while consulting for and utilizing a Sustainability App focused on reducing primary consumption. Fast forward two months later and, Matt, a VP of Agency Relations for a bank in Minneapolis, had given his notice to join Melissa, Director of Compliance for a wine company, in Massapequa. They were soon married and decided to try their hand at soap as a family hobby, believing in sustainability and self-sufficiency. As the hobby expanded into a business, WTS still kept their soap making as small batch and as local as possible, sourcing their packaging, essential oils and ingredients in New York state. Now you can find their unique soaps, which range from Starry Night (out of their Picassoap collection) to the Dirty Hippie (along with their lotions, balms and shampoos) at various farmers markets and festivals throughout Long Island and on their website. When they aren’t working alongside each other every night and weekend, you can find Matt and Melissa with their two sons and ever changing number of chickens. Like we said, they live it.
